Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been effective in reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, often bringing about an improved level of function, medication reduction, and slowing the progression of the illness.
Parkinson’s patients who receive acupuncture often report the following:
• Decreased tremors
• Regain the ability to smell odors
• Do more with less fatigue
• Regain ability to walk backwards
At this time, a study of the effects of acupuncture on fatigue caused by Parkinson’s is ongoing. The study was funded by the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson’s research to evaluate the ability of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to reduce fatigue.
The study began in 2010 at the University of Colorado Hospital under the direction of Dr. Benzi Kluger, assistant professor of neurology and psychiatry, to study non-motor symptoms, and the effects of acupuncture to reduce them.
So far, Dr. Kluger has seen dramatic improvement in fatigue in a number of the subjects. Many of the subjects have gone back to doing things they used to do.
