If you are experiencing feelings such as sadness, sleeping too much, loss of appetite and difficulty in taking care of everyday responsibilities, you may be depressed. The causes of depression vary. Traumatic events such as the loss of a loved one, a job, or any drastic change that affects your life can result in depression. This includes physical trauma, an imbalance in neurotransmitters in the brain, and, of course, the potential for becoming depressed from prescribed medications is always there.
There are a number of western medications that are used successfully to treat depression. Unfortunately, they simply suppress symptoms, cause serious side effects, and often have no effect at all. Drowsiness may occur severely limiting daily activities, whereas the correct herbal formula and acupuncture will not do that. Also, keep in mind that antidepressants affect a number of the body’s functions and can complicate the original set of symptoms.
Most people would prefer to avoid side effects, and, in most instances, that can be achieved with acupuncture, herbal formulas, counseling, and nutrition. Within three to four treatments your energy should increase, and your outlook become more optimistic as qi and blood moves more smoothly.
There are genetic conditions that are more difficult to treat, and in cases such as schizophrenic and manic depressive disorders, medications can often be reduced by applying the same holistic methods discussed above.
